Dear Friends of St. Monica,
Where did the summer go? We are in full swing with the beginning of school, and RCIA. Sunday School, Youth Ministry, Bible Study and other ministries are not far behind!!
Welcome to Fr. Juan Jose Valdes, our interim associate pastor, who will be with us through January 1, 2009 while Fr. Scott is in Guadelajara, Mexico studying the Spanish language and the Latino culture. Fr. Juan is a soft spoken, likeable young priest who is on loan to our Archdiocese from his home diocese of Guadelajara. I hope you have had the chance to meet him.
Fr. Scott is doing well. He drove to Mexico (his choice!) and after 2,200 miles alone in the car, I think he was questioning his decision! Outside of loosing his cell phone, he is doing well and adjusting to things. I hear from him frequently through e-mail. Read below to learn more about Fr. Scott’s adventures!
Our St. Monica Feast Day celebration was held on August 23rd. We began with 5:30 Mass in the church, then we moved outside “under the tent” for a grand meal representing nine different ethnic backgrounds! It was a wonderful parish celebration and I want to send special thanks to all those who worked so hard to prepare the food and organized such a big event. Thank you!!
One of the additions to our facilities is a security camera system. Following several robberies of vehicles in the parking lots and some other security issues, we made the decision to place 13 cameras around our campus, inside and out. We are hoping that this will be a strong deterrent to criminals. The police have told us that car break-ins has been a problem in this area of the city, not just at St. Monica. So, “SMILE, YOU’RE ON CANDID CAMERA!” (Be mindful not to leave any valuables or anything that appears valuable in your car. )
So many of our college age parishioners are heading off to school. We want to wish them much success in their college career. I hope you find a church home while you are on campus and please come and see us when you are home for vacation. St. Monica will always welcome you.
Blessings and Peace,
Fr. Paul Koetter
